One-of-a-Kind Culinary Event Challenges Young Chefs to use Organics and Cook up Winners
October 1, 2007, Toronto, Ontario:
On the last day of the Ethnic and Specialty Food Show yesterday, Planet Organic Market announced a unique, culinary event in partnership with chefs associations across Canada to celebrate the release of the Planet Organic Cook Book. Diane Shaskin, VP Marketing for the food retailer and author of the cookbook, said of the launch, “We knew organic ingredients are often prized by chefs for their amazing taste as well as being friendly to the planet, but we wanted to make that same connection for the amateur chef so they can embrace organics.
Canadians are having a love affair with fine food – the preparation, the presentation and the enjoyment. Organic ingredients are the next step to creating a feast that not only looks and tastes amazing but is healthier and better for the planet. Linking the two is what this one-of-a-kind Canadian event is all about.” Planet Organic Market is all Canadian; all organic and passionate about why organics are the taste of tomorrow, makes sense that the company presents an exciting opportunity for chefs across the country who feel the same way. The Planet Organic Black Box Challenge takes place on World Chef Day – Saturday, October 20 - in Halifax and Victoria while the Edmonton Organic Black Box Challenge takes place on Saturday November 3. Junior chefs (those still in school or on internships) are presented with a black box* containing 100% organic ingredients. In a set time they must fashion a delicious dish which will be judged by chefs, local celebs, and Planet Organic Market reps. Of course the local audiences will have the opportunity to taste for themselves the difference 100% organics make. Steve Walker-Duncan, President of the Culinary Federation of Canada Victoria Chapter, is enthusiastic about the concept, “It is the first time in Canada that a traditional black box is going 100% organic, we are really proud to be in on the ground floor. Our gratitude goes out to Cadillac Fairview for generously donating mall space for the day.”In each city the participating chefs have selected a charity to fund raise for during the culinary event. Many are planning to engage their senior chefs as well - in Victoria they are raising money for the Mustard Seed Food Bank and competing for bragging rights for most popular chili. For these chefs, visitors to The Bay Centre are the judges! What is a Black Box? A competitor is given a mystery box of ingredients with which to conjure up a menu item as designated by the sponsors. All Planet Organic Black Box Challenge event details and excerpts from Planet Organic Cookbook will be available on www.planetorganic.ca
